Light Jet vs. Midsize Jet: Which Is Right for Your Trip?

Light Jet vs. Midsize Jet: Which Is Right for Your Trip?

The most common aircraft decision in private aviation. Here is how to think about it, and when each category makes sense.

Light Jet vs. Midsize Jet

The choice between a light jet and a midsize jet is the most common aircraft decision in private charter. Both categories are excellent, the right choice depends on your specific trip.

Light Jets: When They Make Sense

Light jets are ideal for:

  • Groups of 4 to 6 passengers
  • Routes under 1,500 nautical miles
  • Trips where efficiency and cost are priorities
  • Destinations with shorter runways

The best light jets available today, the Citation CJ3+, Phenom 300E, and Learjet 75 Liberty, are genuinely excellent aircraft. They cruise at 450+ knots, have comfortable four-to-six seat cabins, and are widely available across the United States.

The limitation: Light jets have smaller cabins, less baggage capacity, and shorter range than midsize aircraft. On a 3-hour flight, the difference in cabin comfort becomes meaningful.

Midsize Jets: When They Make Sense

Midsize jets are ideal for:

  • Groups of 6 to 9 passengers
  • Routes of 2 to 4 hours
  • Trips where cabin comfort is a priority
  • Passengers who want a stand-up cabin

The Citation XLS+ is the most popular midsize jet in the United States for good reason: it has a stand-up cabin, seats up to 9 passengers, and is available at virtually every major FBO in the country. The Hawker 800XP offers more range and a slightly larger cabin.

The limitation: Midsize jets cost 30 to 50% more per hour than light jets. For a short route, that premium may not be justified.

The Decision Framework

Ask yourself three questions:

1. How many passengers? If 7 or more, go midsize.

2. How long is the flight? If 2.5 hours or more, go midsize.

3. How much baggage? If significant luggage for multiple passengers, go midsize.

If the answer to all three is "small, short, minimal," a light jet is the right call. If any answer points toward more, step up to midsize.

Your advisor will always recommend the right aircraft for your specific trip, not the most expensive one.
